The old National School has been converted to display photographs, townland maps, documents and artifacts from local industries. It also houses temporary exhibitions and 'Heritage World' - a genealogical research service with over 5 million records on database. Just 400 yards from the Heritage Centre, an ancient cross was discovered in 1776. It now has pride of place in the village and is one of the historic treasures of Ireland....

Step back in time and discover the magic and charm of an Irish narrow gauge railway at the end of the 19th century. The line, which opened in 1887 and was closed in 1959, is being lovingly restored as a fully operational railway. Originally, the line ran from Dromod to Belturbet, some 33 and three quarter miles, with a 14 and three quarter mile spur from Ballinamore to Arigna. Railway enthusiasts will be delighted to see the steam locomotives and coaches at Whitehead collected by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland. The most famous puffer, the Portrush Flyer, steams out from Whitehead Excursion Station to Portrush via Belfast on several summer days....

A section of the famous Tralee to Dingle Light Railway (1891-1953),  was restored to allow you to experience first hand the thrill of what it is like to be a passenger in a steam train. This is a must for adults and children alike.
It is advisable to contact prior to arranging your visit as the staem train is not always open to the public....

Based close to Whitehead Railway Station, the RPSI has a unique collection of Irish Standard Gauge steam locomotives and coaches on display. The headquarters are open every Sunday in July, when an engine will be in steam to give short rides on the site and most other weekends for static displays. The society also runs a number of mainline steam events.
